Energy production was responsible for 37% of Iceland's emissions in 2020. This includes emissions from burning fossil fuels, such as in transportation, fishing boats, and industry, as well as emissions from geothermal power plants. CO₂ is the main greenhouse gas emitted during energy production and has been responsible for 97-98% of the sectors emissions since 1990. The biggest increase in emissions has occurred in emissions from road transportation and geothermal power plants.
